Inspectors

Before being contracted by NMMA in 2006, Denis was a marine surveyor with comprehensive assignments ranging from condition and value surveys to electrical failures. For many years, Denis served Sea Ray Boats as an assembly supervisor, manufacturing engineering technician, prototype development technician and ABYC & USCG compliance specialist. Denis is also experienced in marine repair.

Ian Campbell is a marine engineering graduate of the Canadian Coast Guard College in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Ian’s professional experience at sea and on the inland waterways across Canada serving in the Coast Guard fleet has provided him with firsthand knowledge of the many aspects of marine operations, small craft construction and the intersection of the recreational boating sector. Ian is the Chair of Canada’s Small Craft Committee and participates regularly in the American Boat and Yacht Council Technical Advisory Group, and recently achieved his ABYC Standards Certification.

Steve has more than 30 years of marine industry experience. Steve has worked for several major boat manufacturers, holding management positions in engineering, customer service and quality assurance. Steve has been involved with standard development and compliance for 25 years. He became a certification inspector for IMCI in 1999, is a member of the ABYC Fuel & Ventilation Committee and is a former member of the Electrical Project Technical Committee. He is certified by the ABYC for Standards Accreditation and Electrical Marine Technician.

Ulrich (Uli) has extensive experience in the boating industry and serves NMMA in the European Union where he is managing director of the International Marine Certification Institute in Brussels, Belgium. Uli’s formal education includes a degree in professional engineering for naval architecture and ocean engineering from Aachen University in Aachen, Germany. Uli is an inspector for both NMMA Certification and CE Certification and currently sits on multiple ISO technical committees.

Joining the NMMA inspector’s team in late 2015, Gregg brings his extensive marine industry background of over 25 years of engineering and design experience. Having worked for several leading boat builders in the U.S., Gregg has in-depth knowledge on the customer side of the NMMA certification process, in addition to his expertise in domestic and international standards. Gregg is a longtime boater, and enjoys offshore fishing and surfing along the Florida coast.

Ronnie has worked in the marine industry for 37 years with Sea Ray Boats. During his time with Sea Ray, Ronnie spent 18 years as the lead compliance inspector for all products produced at the Vonore, Tennessee facility.  He is certified by ABYC for Standards, Electrical and Systems.

Ulrich (Ulli) joined NMMA’s team of inspectors in 2006 covering NMMA Certification as well as CE Certification in the European Union. He is the certification manager for IMCI and has more than 12 years of boat building experience. Additionally, Ulli is a member of the Experts Association of Boat- and Shipbuilding and the German Boat- and Shipbuilding Association.

Marc has worked in the marine industry in many different aspects, from Hydrostatics testing to Marine Engineering. Marc earned a B.S.E. from the University of Michigan in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. He has worked in the boat building industry as a design engineer, project manager and wooden boat builder. In 2002 he started his marine surveying and consulting business. He is currently a member of Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors, and ABYC. Marc is avid sailor and currently holds board positions with the Grand Traverse Yacht Club, and Traverse Area Community Sailing.

Anton joined NMMA in early 2022. He is located in Finland and focuses on serving customers in northern Europe and Scandinavian countries. Besides NMMA he has been working for the International Marine Certification Institute as a CE inspector since 2009. Anton graduated from Southampton Solent University in 2006 with a BEng (Hons) degree in yacht design and has been immersed in the boatbuilding industry since 1998. In addition to certification work Anton is experienced in naval architecture, wooden boatbuilding, FRP boat repair and recreational sailing.

Eric Skaggs was hired into the marine industry in 1976 as an assembler and has worked on mechanical marine systems on boats ranging from 13’ to 65’.  For the past 24 years Eric has been involved with the Quality and Compliance aspects of Product Development and Engineering functions.  He has been a member of the NMMA BYCC for 20 years, including terms that he served as Vice Chair of the BYCC.  He has participated on multiple ABYC PTC’s over the years, including time as a member of the Technical Board PTC and the Director of the Hull Division standards.  He has also served as a member of the ABYC Technical Advisory Group (TAG) and as a member of ISO Working Groups.  Eric attained an Associate of the Arts Degree in Business Administration and also served as an active-duty Marine for two years.

Tim recently signed on with NMMA to inspect manufacturers seeking NMMA Certification in Australia. He is an inspector for IMCI as well. Tim’s qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Naval Architecture from Australian Maritime College as well as ten years post graduate experience in the design and analysis of steel, aluminum and FRP commercial and recreational vessels. Tim has more than 14 years experience as a trade certified boat and shipbuilder and is now director of ASEA Yacht Design in Miami, Queensland.
