NMMA Boat & Yacht Certification is a certification program that helps manufacturers ensure their boats are built to applicable standards set by the American Boats & Yacht Council (ABYC), and to promote their compliance to the public.

Participating boat manufacturers must submit applications for all models; each model must undergo an annual physical inspection conducted by an NMMA inspector. To achieve Certification, a manufacturer must rectify any variance found during the inspection process. The manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that all production units are manufactured in full compliance with the certified design.

The annual requirements for NMMA Certification and certified boat are detailed in the certification agreement and published policies and documents. The standards applicable to each model year for NMMA Certified boats are outlined in the Standards Basis.

In addition to the above, all boats sold in Canada are required to be Transport Canada compliant as per regulation TP1332 "Construction Standards for Small Vessels". To learn what is required to sell a boat in Canada click here.
